Vaping, IQOS and Nicotine Pouches During Ramadan in the UAE: Timing, Etiquette and Planning Your Supply

RBy RobertUpdated 7 Oct 202615 min read

SHORT ANSWER

Does vaping, IQOS or a nicotine pouch break the fast? UAE rules for public use, an iftar-to-suhoor routine and how much to stock before Ramadan 2027.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS FROM THIS GUIDE

  • The Grand Mufti of Dubai has said vaping invalidates the fast in the same way as smoking a cigarette, because the aerosol is deliberately taken into the body.
  • IQOS heats TEREA tobacco instead of burning it, but you still inhale an aerosol through your mouth, which is the reason vaping breaks the fast.
  • The nicotine and flavorings dissolve in saliva, and some is swallowed.

Ramadan changes more than when you eat. If you use a RELX or JUUL pod vape, an IQOS ILUMA with TEREA sticks, or nicotine pouches, your whole routine shifts into the night for 29 or 30 days.

This guide covers what breaks the fast according to UAE scholars, what non-Muslims are expected to do in public, how to run each product from iftar to suhoor, how much to buy before the month starts, and how to use Ramadan to cut down if you want to. It is written for adult users in the Dubai and UAE, whether you are fasting or not.

When Does Ramadan 2027 Start in the UAE?

Ramadan 2027 (1448 AH) is expected to begin on Monday, February 8, 2027, in the UAE. The UAE Astronomy Centre and the International Astronomical Center both point to that date, based on the crescent not being visible on February 6. The official start is confirmed only after the UAE Moon Sighting Committee looks for the crescent after sunset on Sunday, February 7.

Key date Expected day What it means for you
Moon sighting Sunday, February 7, 2027 (evening) Final confirmation of the first fast
First day of fasting Monday, February 8, 2027 Daytime use stops for those fasting from dawn
Last possible fasting day Monday, March 8 or Tuesday, March 9, 2027 Depends on whether Ramadan runs 29 or 30 days
Eid Al Fitr Tuesday, March 9 or Wednesday, March 10, 2027 Normal daytime routine returns

How Long Is Each Fast in Dubai?

Each fast runs from the dawn (Fajr) prayer to sunset (Maghrib). In Dubai, the first fast of Ramadan 2027 is about 12 hours 30 minutes, rising to roughly 13 hours 6 minutes by the 29th day as the days lengthen. That is shorter than the summer Ramadans of recent years, which ran past 14 hours.

Why a February Ramadan Changes Things

Ramadan 2027 falls in the UAE winter, with daytime highs in the low to mid 20s °C. Pods, devices and TEREA packs face far less heat stress than they do in a summer Ramadan. Fasting days are also shorter, so the gap between your suhoor and iftar sessions is about 12 to 13 hours, not 15.

The Hijri calendar is lunar, so Ramadan moves about 10 to 11 days earlier every year. Ramadan 2026 began on February 18; Ramadan 2028 is expected in late January.

Does Vaping, IQOS or a Nicotine Pouch Break the Fast?

Yes. Vaping breaks the fast, and the same reasoning covers IQOS ILUMA and nicotine pouches. Dr Ahmad bin Abdul Aziz Al-Haddad, Grand Mufti and Director of the Fatwa Department in Dubai, told Gulf News that an e-cigarette is no different from a regular cigarette for fasting purposes: inhaling it puts substances into the body, which invalidates the fast. He added that nicotine patches, which work through the skin, do not.

Product Breaks the fast? Why
RELX and JUUL pod vapes Yes Aerosol is inhaled into the body. Ruled the same as a cigarette by the Dubai Fatwa Department.
Disposable vapes (Al Fakher, Pod Salt) Yes Same as any vape: inhaled aerosol.
IQOS ILUMA with TEREA sticks Yes Heated tobacco aerosol is inhaled through the mouth, the same entry route as a vape or cigarette.
Nicotine pouches (VELO, White Fox) Yes, by most scholars Nicotine and flavor dissolve in saliva and are swallowed. Scholars have ruled the same way on snus and smokeless tobacco.
Nicotine-free vape Yes The ruling is about deliberately taking something into the body through the mouth, not about nicotine alone.
Nicotine patch No Absorbed through the skin, not through the mouth or nose. Confirmed by the Dubai Grand Mufti.

IQOS and TEREA: Is Heated Tobacco Different?

No. IQOS ILUMA heats TEREA tobacco instead of burning it, so there is no smoke or ash. That difference matters for how the product works, but not for fasting. You still draw an aerosol through your mouth into your body, which is the exact point the Dubai Grand Mufti made about vaping. We found no UAE fatwa that treats heated tobacco differently.

Nicotine Pouches: Why “Nothing Goes Into Your Lungs” Doesn’t Help

This is the most common Ramadan question about pouches. A pouch sits under your lip, so nothing is inhaled. But the nicotine, sweeteners and flavorings mix with saliva, and some of that saliva is swallowed. Scholars ruled that snus breaks the fast for exactly this reason, and a tobacco-free nicotine pouch works the same way in the mouth.

What If You Used One by Mistake?

Scholars generally separate forgetting from choosing. A fasting person who eats or drinks after genuinely forgetting they are fasting keeps their fast, and many scholars apply the same principle to other things that break the fast. Lighting up a device on purpose, even “just one puff”, is treated as deliberately breaking the fast. If you are unsure about your own situation, ask a scholar or the official fatwa service in your emirate.

Patches, Gum and Lozenges as a Daytime Bridge

If the daytime craving is what worries you, the nicotine patch is the one form the Dubai Grand Mufti said does not invalidate the fast. The Jordanian General Iftaa’ Department issued the same ruling in January 2026. Gum and lozenges are different: they dissolve in the mouth, so they follow the same reasoning as a pouch. Some scholars also hold that even patches break the fast, so this is a point where opinions differ.

Can Non-Muslims Vape or Use IQOS in Public During Ramadan?

Not in public view during fasting hours. Non-Muslims are not expected to fast, but everyone in the UAE is asked not to eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public between dawn and sunset. Vaping, IQOS and nicotine pouches all count as smoking for this purpose. The National reports that breaking this rule can technically bring a fine of up to AED 2,000 or up to one month in jail, though it is rarely applied.

Where you are Daytime during Ramadan Notes
Your home or hotel room Allowed In a hotel, only in a room where smoking is allowed
Your own car Allowed if no one can see inside Discretion advised; never with children under 12 in the car
Designated smoking areas Allowed Same smoking rooms and zones as the rest of the year
Office Only in the space your employer provides Companies must provide a private room for non-fasting staff to eat
Malls, streets, parks, public beaches Not allowed Banned all year for vaping; during Ramadan, avoid any visible use
Metro, buses, taxis Not allowed Banned all year, with fines

Nicotine pouches are the easiest to use discreetly, but “no one can see it” is not the same as “allowed”. Keep pouches to the same private spaces as everything else during daylight. For the year-round rules on malls, transport and airports, see our Dubai vape rules guide.

Etiquette That Matters More in Ramadan

  • Don’t exhale near people who are fasting, even outdoors in a permitted spot. The smell of a sweet vape or heated tobacco is hard on someone 10 hours into a fast.
  • Put the device away before iftar. The last 30 minutes before Maghrib is when fasting colleagues and neighbors are most worn out. Wait for the call to prayer.
  • Keep cloud size low after iftar in shared spaces. Restaurants and majlis gatherings fill up quickly after sunset. Step outside to a smoking area, as you would at any other time of year.
  • If you slip, apologize. Lighting up out of habit in public happens to new residents. A quick apology and putting it away is what people expect.

Working in the UAE During Ramadan

Private-sector working hours are reduced by two hours a day during Ramadan. A shorter day means fewer hours away from your private space, which helps if you are a non-fasting user. Fasting users get a shorter wait between suhoor and getting home before iftar.

Your Iftar-to-Suhoor Routine, Product by Product

If you are fasting, all of your use moves into about 11 to 11.5 hours of night, from Maghrib (around 6:15 pm in Dubai in February) to Fajr (around 5:30 am). The simplest habit change is this: charge everything during the day, when you can’t use it anyway, and check pod or stick levels before suhoor so you never start a night with an empty device.

Time What to do
Daytime (fasting) Charge your device and pocket charger. Leave pods, sticks and pouch cans sealed and stored.
Iftar (Maghrib) Break your fast with water and dates and eat first. A first session on an empty stomach often brings dizziness or nausea.
After iftar and Taraweeh Main use window. Pace yourself instead of chain-using to “catch up”.
Before suhoor Check battery and pod or stick count for the next night. Finish your last session before the Fajr call, not during it.

Nicotine Pouches: VELO and White Fox

A pouch lasts 20 to 60 minutes, so most people need only one or two after iftar and one at suhoor. If your night is mostly social, a pouch is the most discreet option among our nicotine pouches. Don’t put one in during your suhoor meal and leave it in past the Fajr call: anything still in your mouth at dawn counts as breaking the fast for those who are fasting.

Pod Vapes: RELX and JUUL

Put your device on charge in the afternoon, while you can’t use it anyway, so it starts the night full. Before suhoor, check how much is left in your pod and keep a spare ready for the next night, so you’re never searching for one after iftar. For the first session after breaking your fast, use a lower power setting if your device has one, and take short, gentle puffs. Pods and devices are in our RELX range and JUUL range.

Heated Tobacco: IQOS and TEREA

Each TEREA stick is a fixed session, so plan the night by sticks. Count out what you need before iftar, and keep the open pack closed between sessions. Charge your IQOS in the afternoon so it is full by Maghrib, and finish your last stick a few minutes before the Fajr call, not during it. See the full range of TEREA sticks.

Don’t Start Your First Session at Your Usual Strength

After 12 to 13 hours without nicotine, your tolerance drops. The first hit after iftar feels much stronger than a midday hit does the rest of the year. Many users feel lightheaded or nauseous on the first night. Eat first, take a few gentle puffs instead of a long draw, and wait a few minutes before the next.

How to Handle Nicotine Cravings While Fasting

Cravings usually peak in the afternoon and in the hour before iftar, when hunger, thirst and the nicotine gap all hit together. The first three to four days are the hardest; most regular users say the daytime urge becomes easier to manage by the end of the first week.

What Actually Helps During the Day

  • Make suhoor count. Eat slow-release food and drink plenty of water at suhoor. Low blood sugar and dehydration feel a lot like a nicotine craving, and they make the real one worse.
  • Finish nicotine before the Fajr call, then stop thinking about it. People who keep checking the clock find the day longer. Put the device and pouch can out of sight once you have finished suhoor.
  • Move your trigger moments. If your habit is a session after coffee, with the car engine on, or on a work break, those moments will pull hardest. Change the routine: a short walk, a call, a different break spot.
  • Expect the 4 pm dip. Irritability and poor focus late in the day are common for both smokers and vapers in Ramadan. Plan demanding work and important conversations for the morning.
  • Don’t overcorrect at night. Chain-vaping or using pouch after pouch between iftar and suhoor to “make up” for the day keeps your dependence where it was. It also makes the next day’s craving stronger.

Sleep and Taraweeh Nights

Late nights are normal in Ramadan, and a session right before sleep can make it harder to fall asleep. Nicotine is a stimulant. If you sleep between Taraweeh and suhoor, have your last session at least an hour before bed and your next one at suhoor.

When to Get Help

If daytime withdrawal is affecting your work, mood or ability to fast, speak to your doctor or a pharmacist about nicotine replacement. A patch through the day is the option the Dubai Grand Mufti said does not break the fast.

How Much to Stock Up Before Ramadan

Work out your nightly use, multiply by 30, and buy that amount in the week before February 8. Most people use less in Ramadan than in a normal month, because the daytime sessions disappear, so your normal monthly order is a safe upper limit.

A 30-Night Supply by Product and Habit

Product Light user Regular user Heavy user
TEREA sticks (20 per pack) 5 a night = 150 sticks = 7 to 8 packs 10 a night = 300 sticks = 15 packs (1.5 cartons) 20 a night = 600 sticks = 30 packs (3 cartons)
RELX Pod Pro 2 (1.9 mL, ~650 puffs) 1 pod every 3 nights = 10 pods 1 pod every 2 nights = 15 pods 1 pod a night = 30 pods
JUUL 2 pods (1.2 mL, ~200 puffs, 2 per pack) 1 pod every 2 nights = 15 pods = 8 packs 1 pod a night = 30 pods = 15 packs 2 pods a night = 60 pods = 30 packs
Nicotine pouches (20 per can) 2 a night = 60 = 3 cans 4 a night = 120 = 6 cans 6 a night = 180 = 9 cans

Buying TEREA by the carton (10 packs) is the cheapest per stick, and a February Ramadan makes storing a carton far easier than in summer. Our guide to storing TEREA cartons covers how to keep a month’s supply in good condition.

When to Order

  • Order in the first week of February. That leaves time for a second delivery if a flavor is out of stock, before the first fast on February 8.
  • Top up before the last ten nights. The last ten nights of Ramadan and the run-up to Eid are the busiest days of the month for deliveries. Place a top-up order around February 25.
  • Delivery hours fit the night. We take orders 24 hours a day and deliver daily from 10 am to 12:30 am, with 1-hour delivery in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman and 12-hour delivery to Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah. These hours stay the same during Ramadan, so an order placed after iftar in Dubai arrives the same night.

Storing a Month’s Supply

  • TEREA: keep packs sealed until you need them, in a cool, dry cupboard, out of direct sun and never in the car. Our guide on how long TEREA stays fresh after opening covers opened packs.
  • RELX and JUUL pods: keep them sealed in their packaging and stored upright. Warm conditions thin e-liquid and can lead to leaks.
  • Nicotine pouches: keep cans closed, in a cool, dry place. Open one can at a time rather than several at once.
  • Devices: a spare charging cable at home and one at work removes the most common reason a night’s routine falls apart.

Using Ramadan to Cut Down

Ramadan already takes away 12 to 13 hours of use a day, so it is the easiest month of the year to step down. The trick is to lower strength or quantity at night too, instead of letting the evening absorb the whole day’s habit.

Product How to step down over the month
RELX Pod Pro 2 Move down one strength: 5% to 3% in week one, then 3% to 1.55% (Green Melon is the 1.55% option).
JUUL 2 Pods come in one strength (18 mg/mL), so cut the number of pods: from one a night to one every two nights by the last ten nights.
IQOS ILUMA / TEREA TEREA doesn’t come in lower strengths in the UAE. Cut sticks per night, for example from 10 to 7 to 5 across the month.
VELO pouches Drop one dot level at a time on VELO’s dot scale, for example from 10 mg to 6 mg, then 4 mg. See our VELO strength guide.
White Fox pouches White Fox starts at a high strength, so switch to a VELO 6 mg or 10 mg pouch to step down.

A Simple Four-Week Plan

  1. Week 1: keep your usual product, but no use in the first 15 minutes after iftar. Eat and drink first.
  2. Week 2: drop one strength level, or cut one session a night.
  3. Weeks 3 and 4 (including the last ten nights): no use after Taraweeh until suhoor, unless you are awake through the night.
  4. Eid: decide whether to bring back daytime use, or keep the nights-only pattern you have built.

Cutting down is a personal choice, not a requirement of the fast. If you are aiming to stop completely, speak to your doctor about nicotine replacement and a quit plan.

Get Ready for Ramadan 2027

Ramadan 2027 runs from about February 8 to March 9 or 10, and a little planning makes the month far easier. Vaping, IQOS and nicotine pouches all break the fast, so fasting users keep every session between iftar and suhoor. Non-Muslims keep use out of public view during daylight. Charge your devices during the day, take the first session after iftar slowly, and use the quieter nights to cut down if you want to.

The simplest step is to have your month’s supply at home before the first fast. Order RELX and JUUL pods, TEREA sticks, IQOS ILUMA devices and nicotine pouches from Vape Hype, with 1-hour delivery in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman, normal delivery hours right through Ramadan, and cash or card on delivery. Ramadan Kareem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does vaping break your fast in Ramadan?

Yes. The Grand Mufti of Dubai has said vaping invalidates the fast in the same way as smoking a cigarette, because the aerosol is deliberately taken into the body.

Does IQOS break the fast?

Yes. IQOS heats TEREA tobacco instead of burning it, but you still inhale an aerosol through your mouth, which is the reason vaping breaks the fast.

Do nicotine pouches break the fast?

Yes, according to most scholars. The nicotine and flavorings dissolve in saliva, and some is swallowed. Scholars have ruled the same way on snus.

Does a nicotine-free vape break the fast?

Yes. The ruling is about deliberately taking something into the body through the mouth, not about nicotine itself.

Does a nicotine patch break the fast?

The Grand Mufti of Dubai has said a nicotine patch does not, because it works through the skin. Some scholars disagree, so this is one point where opinions differ.

Can I vape right after the Fajr call if I haven’t finished?

No. For anyone fasting, the fast starts at the Fajr call. Finish your last session a few minutes before it.

Can non-Muslims vape in public during Ramadan?

Not in public view during fasting hours. Use it at home, in your hotel room, in a designated smoking area, or in your car if no one can see inside.

Can I use a nicotine pouch at work during Ramadan?

Only in the private space your employer sets aside for non-fasting staff, during daylight hours. Pouches are discreet, but the same public-use rule applies.

Is there a fine for vaping in public during Ramadan?

UAE media, including The National, report a possible fine of up to AED 2,000 or up to one month in jail for eating, drinking or smoking in public during fasting hours. It is rarely applied. Vaping in malls, on public transport and in other enclosed public places is fined all year round.

Can I vape between iftar and suhoor?

Yes, the fast does not apply at night. Muslims also follow their own scholars’ view on whether vaping is permitted at all. That is a separate question from whether it breaks the fast.

Do delivery hours change during Ramadan?

No. Delivery runs on normal hours throughout Ramadan: 10 am to 12:30 am daily, with 1-hour delivery in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman. That covers the full evening after iftar.

Is it a good idea to quit during Ramadan?

Many people use Ramadan to cut down, because the daytime habit is already gone. If you want to stop completely, speak to your doctor about nicotine replacement and support.
